"Gathering to the Winter Village" Winter camp for the Skolt Saami 2026

A winter camp for the Skolt Saami, "Gathering to the Winter Village", took place on March 26–29, 2026 at Sanila’s Reindeer farm in Sevettijärvi, Inari, on the Finnish side of Sápmi.
Just as the Skolt Saami gathered in their winter settlements before, the winter camp brought members of the cross-border community together – to get to know and participate in the traditions of Skolt Saami culture and the way of annual cycle following life. The camp program included, among other things, fishing with traditional winter fishing methods, and theory and practical guidance in handling and preserving fish using traditional Sámi methods.
The program also included getting to know the Skolt Saami artefacts of the Sámi Museum Siida, and working in a handicraft workshop inspired by them. We had participants coming from delightfully diverse backgrounds from both Finland and Norway. At the camp, everyone got to be themselves and try their wings, for example, with speaking their lost mother tongue – Skolt Saami – in a safe, pressureless environment. Camp participants got to reunite with old friends and meet new acquaintances – some even found new relatives.
Generations gathered together to tell stories, learn traditional crafts and fishing methods, eat well, dance and sing; spend valuable time among the community in meaningful activities, during which the connection to one's own culture can be found and strengthened almost without noticing. According to one participant's feedback, the camp felt almost like a large, cross-border family gathering. This beautifully summarizes our project’s goals regarding the camps.

The camp was organised by Oummu rââst raaj – People cross the borders, a joint project of the municipalities of Inari and Sør-Varanger, co-funded by the EU's Interreg Aurora programme. The camp programme was organised in cooperation with the MÁHTUT project, the Sámi Education Institute, the SÁMIPOLITY project, and the Sámi Museum Siida. In addition, experts in Skolt Saami culture were guiding the activities.
Vinterleir for skoltesamene, “Samling til vinterbosettingen”, fant sted 26.–29. mars 2026 på Sanilas reinsdyrgård i Sevettijärvi, Inari, på den finske siden av Sameland.
Akkurat som skoltesamene tidligere migrerte til vinterbosettingen, vinterleiren tilbudt deltakerne fra det grenseoverskridende samfunnet et innblikk i den tradisjonelle skoltesamiske kulturen og levemåten slik skoltesamene selv levde vinterstid. Leirprogrammet inkluderte blant annet fiske med tradisjonelle vinterfiskemetoder, teori og praktisk veiledning i håndtering og konservering av fisk med tradisjonelle samiske metoder, å bli kjent med skoltesamiske gjenstander fra Samemuseet Siida, og å arbeide inspirert av dem i et håndverksverksted. Helgen kulminerte med en skoltesamisk feiring. Programmet for leiren finnes på skolttesamisk, finsk, norsk og engelsk nedenfor.
Vinterleiren hadde deltakere med gledelig mangfoldig bakgrunn fra både Finland og Norge i ulike aldre og livsperspektiv. På leiren fikk alle være seg selv og prøve seg, for eksempel ved å snakke sitt tapte morsmål – skoltesamisk – i et trygt og uformelt miljø uten press. Deltakerne fikk gjenforenes med gamle venner og stifte nye bekjentskaper – noen fant til og med nye slektninger. Generasjoner samlet seg for å fortelle historier, lære tradisjonelt håndverk og fiskemetoder, spise godt, danse og synge. Deltakerne kunne tilbringe verdifull tid i fellesskapet gjennom meningsfulle aktiviteter, hvor tilknytningen til egen kultur nesten som en bieffekt kan bli gjenoppdaget og styrket. Ifølge tilbakemeldingen fra en deltaker føltes leiren nesten som en stor, grenseoverskridende familiesamling. Dette oppsummerer på en vakker måte prosjektets mål med leirene.
