"Gathering to the Winter Village" Winter camp for the Skol Saami 2026

A winter camp for the Skolt Saami, "Gathering to the Winter Village", will take place on March 26–29,2026 at Sanila’s Reindeer farminSevettijärvi, Inari, on the Finnish side of Sápmi.
Just as the Skolt Saamigathered intheirwintersettlementsbefore,the winter campbringsmembers of the cross-border community together–togetto knowandparticipatein the traditions of Skolt Saami culture and theway of annual cyclefollowing life. The camp program includes, among other things, fishing with traditional winter fishing methods, theory and practical guidance in handling and preserving fish using traditional Sámi methods, getting to know the Skolt Saami artefacts of the Sámi Museum Siida, and working in a handicraft workshop inspired by them. The weekend culminates in a Skolt Saami celebration. The preliminary program of the camp can be found in Finnish, Norwegian and English below.
Accommodation is organized in shared rooms for 2–6 people at Sanilas’s Reindeer Farm. All three saunas of the venue are available for camp participants to use, as well as a cozy and atmospheric hut in the yard where you can enjoy the flames of an open fire. The venue is located in the vicinity of Lake Sevettijärvi and Lake Kirakkajärvi, within walking distance of good fishing spots. The camp meals are provided by the Sanila restaurant.
All members of the Skolt Saami community are welcome to the camp, but those under the age of 18 must be accompanied by an adult. The languages of the camp are Finnish, Norwegian, English and Skolt Saami, and everyone can speak the language that feels right to themselves. Let's try to translate all speaking together so that everyone is understood.
Registration for the camp opens on Monday January 19th 2026. The accommodation for the camp is limited, so we encourage to sign yourself up as soon as registration opens! It is also possible to come to the camp for a day visit to participate, for example, in a single activity. Although it’s allowed to make a day visit even without prior announcement, we would still hope you register yourself beforehand in these cases as well. Accommodation and participation in shared transportation require pre-registration.
The camp is organised by Oummu rââst raaj – People cross the borders, a joint project of the municipalities of Inari and Sør-Varanger, co-funded by the EU's Interreg Aurora programme. The camp programme is organised in cooperation with the MÁHTUT project, the Sámi Education Institute, the SÁMIPOLITY project, and the Sámi Museum Siida. In addition, experts in Skolt Saami culture will be guiding the activities.
Vinterleir for skoltesamene, “Samling til vinterbosettingen”, vil finne sted 26.–29. mars 2026 på Sanilas reinsdyrgård i Sevettijärvi, Inari, på den finske siden av Sameland.
Akkurat som skoltesamene tidligere migrerte til vinterbosettingen, ønsker vinterleiren å tilby deltakerne fra det grenseoverskridende samfunnet et innblikk i den tradisjonelle skoltesamiske kulturen og levemåten slik skoltesamene selv levde vinterstid. Leirprogrammet inkluderer blant annet fiske med tradisjonelle vinterfiskemetoder, teori og praktisk veiledning i håndtering og konservering av fisk med tradisjonelle samiske metoder, å bli kjent med skoltesamiske gjenstander fra Samemuseet Siida, og å arbeide inspirert av dem i et håndverksverksted. Helgen kulminerer med en skoltesamisk feiring. Det foreløpige programmet for leiren finnes på finsk, norsk og engelsk nedenfor.
Overnatting foregår i delte rom for 2–6 personer på Sanila reinsdyrgård. Alle de tre badstuene på stedet er tilgjengelige for deltakerne på leiren, samt en koselig og stemningsfull hytte i hagen hvor du kan nyte flammene fra en åpen ild. Overnattingsfasilitetene ligger i nærheten av innsjøene Sevettijärvi og Kirakkajärvi, innen gangavstand til gode fiskeplasser. Leirmåltidene serveres av Sanila restauranten.
Alle medlemmer av det skoltesamiske samfunnet er velkomne til leiren, men de under 18 år må være ledsaget av en voksen. Språkene i leiren er finsk, norsk, engelsk og skoltesamisk, og alle kan snakke det språket som føles riktig for dem. La oss forsøke å oversette for hverandre slik at alle blir forstått.
Påmeldingen til leiren åpner mandag 19. januar 2026. Det finnes et begrenset antall overnattingsplasser, så meld deg på så snart registreringen åpner! Det er også mulig å delta på leiren som dagstur for å bli med i enkelte aktiviteter. Selv om det er tillatt å besøke leiren en dag uten forhåndsvarsel, håper vi fortsatt at du registrerer deg på forhånd også i slike tilfeller. Overnatting og deltakelse i felles transport krever forhåndsregistrering.
Leiren organiseres av Oummu rââst raaj – People cross the borders, et felles prosjekt mellom kommunene Inari og Sør-Varanger, medfinansiert av EUs Interreg Aurora-program. Leirprogrammet organiseres i samarbeid med Samemuseet Siida, SÁMIPOLITY-prosjektet, MÁHTUT-prosjektet og Samisk utdanningsinstitutt SOGSAKK.
